Do or Does (Simplified)

In general, use the auxiliary verb “does” with a singular noun or pronoun, and use the auxiliary verb “do” with a plural noun or pronoun when speaking in simple present tense.

Examples
A. The use of does with a singular noun or pronoun:
  1. She does volunteer work as a translator in México.
  2. He does homework.
3a. The washing machine does the laundry. (In this sentence, the understood pronoun is “it.")
3b. It does matter to me.
4. Erica does her sister's makeup.

B. The use of do with a plural noun or pronoun:
  1. You do gymnastics.
  2. We do our chores.
  3. They do their exercises.
  4. Dogs do understand some spoken language.
C. The use of do with both singular and plural nouns and pronouns:
  1. You do the dishes. (Also correct: All of you do the dishes. / You all do the dishes.)
  2. I do my English lesson.
  3. We do our taxes annually.
  4. Sometimes students do study abroad while learning English.
